I make a weekly, what I call “deposit,” at the big pet store buying such supplies as dog food, cat food, litter, treats, chews, cute toys…OY! So, when I come across a way to save on at least one of those expenses…I’m gonna try it!

On my last grocery trip I purchased one large sweet potato. Now, usually my pups enjoy when I peel it, cut it up in cubes, add a little water and microwave it for a couple of minutes. They love getting a couple of nuggets in their dinner-time meal.

I decided to change it up a bit today and make Sweet Potato Chews. I don’t have a dehydrator, which would have made the process quicker, so I used my oven.

First, I set my oven to it’s lowest setting – 175 degrees. I then sliced the potato lengthwise at about 1/3 of an inch (skins on). Each slice was placed on a cookie sheet that was sprayed with a cooking spray. I placed it in the oven to “dehydrate” not really bake.

The next step is to place the chews in the oven for approximately 5 hours. They sure smelled good! Two things I will do differently next time is 1) leave them in for 1-2 hours more and 2) turn them about half way through. Other than that, they came out really good. Doggies were pleasantly surprised with their new treat. I’m storing them in a small sandwich bag in the refrigerator because I don’t expect that they will last past this week.

Give it a try soon…and get your tator on! Your dogs will thank you for it.
