Time to make some biscuits!

sunbeam gourmet treat makerThis week I purchased the Sunbeam Gourmet Dog Treat Maker at PetsMart. It normally sells for $29.99, but lucky me, it was on sale for $23.99 with only 3 left on the shelf. The newest kitchen gadget made specifically for those of us who enjoy baking for our pups may very well be the hottest selling gift this year!

Today I gave it a go! There are a few recipes included in the instructions, but Sunbeam offers many more on their website. I chose the “Chicken Broth Biscuit” recipe which includes ingredients I already had on hand: whole wheat flour, baking powder, eggs, olive oil, unsweetened applesauce and chicken broth. I used ‘low sodium’ chicken broth in my mix and will most likely replace the whole wheat flour for brown rice flour in my next batch. The batter is not going to be what you traditionally use to bake cookies, rolling out the dough and using cookie cutters. This batter looks much like pancake batter.

Emma & Yeti sat patiently as I began baking the first batch. Only 4 biscuits can be made at a time and the recipe says it yields 12 total. However, my total yield was 30! The unit heats up fast and stays hot throughout the process. It’s easy to over-fill each bone shape, but the over-flow bakes as well. These little pieces are salvageable for taste-testing. Making smaller batches allows for doggies to eat the treats while they’re still fresh.

Each batch takes 15 minutes to bake. Biscuits were super easy to remove onto a wire cooling rack using a wooden spatula.

Emma & Yeti became self-trained to know when the microwave timer beeped, it was time to make more biscuits. They would run to the kitchen waiting to taste the next batch.

To use up all the batter in this recipe, baking each batch for 15 minutes, the whole project took 2+ hours. Clean-up is quick and easy; just wipe the Teflon-coated bones with a damp cloth.

These biscuits do not resemble your store bought dog biscuits. They are more like little cakes. After completely cooling the biscuits on a wire rack, they should be stored in an airtight baggie in the refrigerator.

All in all, the Sunbeam Gourmet Dog Treat Maker is a great little gadget that allows for easy to bake dog treats at home. There are tons of pawsibilities to create your own recipes. This is a better alternative to purchasing the store bought treats that have ingredients I can’t even pronounce. I’m happy I can add my own healthy additions to the treats and know exactly what my dog is ingesting.

WAY TO GO SUNBEAM!
