Retractable leashes are the bane of my existence…my worst nightmare! As a pet sitter and dog walker, my fingers and hands have been rope-burned, sliced opened, twisted and cut. Sometimes they lock when you want them too, sometimes they don’t. When I see a retractable leash, a symphony of horror music goes off in my head like some kind of background music of a film score.
What a retractable leash teaches a dog is to pull on a leash as the well-meaning owner allows Fido to extend the lead on their terms. So counter-productive!
Dr. Becker of Healthy Pets shares this article to explain TEN reasons not to use a retractable leash.
Do yourself, your dog and your dog walker a favor and choose a gentle leader, halter or plain old collar to walk your dog.
